There is no such thing as one size fits all when it comes to a personal career trajectory, and the IT industry is no exception. The perfect job, project or industry for one person can be another’s living nightmare. The first step to finding the right job and carving out a career that challenges and fulfills you, while also supporting your lifestyle and personal interests, is to set some strategic and actionable goals to ensure the job you’re in is always (or almost always) the job you want.

Five Steps to Help You Set up and Reach for Your Career Goals

Whether you are interested in a corporate career, contract or freelance work, or are currently somewhere in the middle, here are a few tips to help you set your goals and design a plan that will get you there.

Be accountable

It’s been said that a goal without a plan is just a wish. For your goals to really gain traction, you must create actionable steps you can measure to create momentum and ensure you’re making progress, whether it’s something as simple as updating your resume and researching prospective companies or enrolling in courses to upgrade or learn a new skill. Whatever you decide to put on your to-do list, make small to midsize tasks and create regular deadlines to keep yourself on track.

Pick an industry you’re passionate about (or at least really interested in)

One of the many benefits of an IT career is you can literally work in any industry you choose. If working in the nonprofit sector or the arts is what really lights you up and gets you excited to get out of bed in the morning, don’t feel pressured to work at a startup or an investment bank if it doesn’t suit your goals, interests or lifestyle.

Find a Mentor

Even mid-career and experienced professionals can use a mentor or career guidance. Leverage your network and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Plan for change

If it’s true the only constant in life is change, that’s especially true in the tech and IT industry. Even with the best and most meticulous planning, there is only so much control that anyone can exert over their job and chosen industry. Make peace and get comfortable with the idea you may have to tweak, adjust or completely revise your plan and start over when circumstances, markets or your lifestyle change.

Give yourself a break

Where possible, try to have fun and not take yourself or your job so seriously. Putting too much pressure on yourself will just make the exercise feel like another chore.

Like any set of rules, take what works best for you and your situation and personalize as you go along in order to create a plan that accurately reflects and fits with your career objectives, needs, and personal goals and adjust as needed.
