Stress can be a side effect of every job. Tight deadlines, last minute projects, important client presentations, and co-worker tension can all lead to difficult days and stressful situations. If there’s no reduction in stress, it can easily lead to burnout. Burnout is a dangerous symptom of intense stress, and it can happen to anyone. How do you know if it’s happening to you?

  1. Boredom: Not every project will ignite your passion. But if you used to love your work and find you’re not interested in anything that comes across your desk anymore, you might be starting to feel the effects of burnout. Do you feel engaged with your projects and co-workers or does everything seem uninteresting and unimportant?
  2. Unmotivated: Getting motivated can be hard some days, but if you’re struggling to start any projects, it might be a symptom of burnout. Unmotivated employees usually find they’re scanning social media or mindlessly reading articles without actually doing any meaningful or impactful work.
  3. Lack of focus: If being unmotivated is having difficulty starting a task, then a lack of focus is what will keep you from making progress or finishing it. If your thoughts are trailing off or you’re distracted, your brain might be overloaded with stress signals and struggling to stay on task. This can definitely hinder the quality of your work and the quality of your work life.

Burnout can cause your work to suffer, potentially threaten your career and disrupt your non-work life. So, can you manage or prevent it? Managing stress might be easier said that done, but there are proven ways to help increase your stress resilience. Some people find that yoga and meditation are helpful, while others need to take a walk every hour to clear their mind and step away from their desk. Your employer may also offer an Employee Assistance Program, or EAP, that gives you resources to reduce stress, like counseling services. Finding what works for you and making time for it, is what’s most important.

Stress can happen to anyone, but it doesn’t need to take over your life. If you think your job or company is creating tension in your life and you don’t see it improving any time soon, get in touch. We can help you find a position that suits you better and help prevent burnout from taking over your life.
