Stress is a natural part of life. It’s common at work too. But when stress gets too high, it can be detrimental to the health of your employees and the health of your business. Here’s what to look for and how to help.

The sure signs and how you can handle them.

  1. More sick days: If you’ve noticed more employees calling in sick or coming in late, it might be because they’re taking mental health days to deal with stress – or they simply can’t get motivated to come into work.
  2. Less laughter: Work isn’t always play, but most managers and companies want to see their employees happy and enjoy being there. A sure sign that stress has started to make an impact is employees talking to each other less, not being as social as a team, and less collaboration.
  3. Reduced productivity: Are people falling behind on deadlines? Are you always having to follow up for progress? If employees seem to be less on their game than usual, that might be a sign of stress or depression. Stress can take a huge toll on both quantity and quality of employee work, so if that seems to be suffering, that could be a sign.

One of the best things that an employer can do for their team is to talk to them. Ask how they’re doing and not just in reference to project progress. You can ask for feedback about their week through a regular anonymous survey they can take through email to help gauge morale, see what your team is struggling with, and find out how you improve their outlook.

Another important part is encouraging work-life balance. Don’t ask that your employees be glued to their smartphones after hours or on breaks. Lead by example by using your PTO time or not answering emails after 8 pm.

Mitigating and managing stress is one of the best ways to reduce employee absenteeism and increase productivity. You can’t fix everything but making efforts to show employees you’re invested in their wellbeing can go a long way towards keeping employees engaged.
