Tech professionals make up one of the busiest segments of almost any business. The information technology or information systems team of most companies tends to be nonstop – running point on service issues, meeting with vendors, helping to deploy solutions, troubleshooting issues, training and more. Here are some tips for managing your time as a tech professional with so much on your plate.

  1. Avoid multitasking: This seems counterintuitive to some, but one of the most important parts of effectively managing time and actually getting more done (and done well) is to avoid multitasking. Trying to do more than one thing at a time doesn’t actually accomplish more – it simply divides your brain’s attention span over several tasks, slowing down your reaction time and processing ability, meaning it will take longer to complete tasks fully. It’s better to shut down other programs or projects and focus on one thing at a time.
  2. Make the most of your downtime: It’s important to relax and recharge. Making sure you get enough sleep, enough exercise, and enough time to focus on non-work matters means you can focus better when you’re actually at your desk. Other downtime – like your commute – can be spent planning your workday and setting the mental intention for the day.
  3. Tackle the tough stuff first: If there are tasks you dread doing, don’t avoid them. Dive right in and get them done. If you don’t, you’re much more likely to spend time lingering on other tasks and procrastinating the undesirable work. This can cause you to miss deadlines and overall reduce your effectiveness at work. It can also drag down your morale and keep you from enjoying a job you otherwise enjoy and excel at.
  4. Use the right setup: Something as simple as a standing desk can increase your energy and productivity, helping you get more done overall and scramble less to keep your tasks in order. Pay attention to how you work best. If you notice that you need quiet to focus on projects, take your laptop to a secluded spot or don a pair of headphones. Be aware of how your environment affects your work.

Finding ways to manage all your tasks in an often too-busy day is tricky, but not impossible. Small steps can help you get more done and feel better doing it.
