Most reviews are an opportunity for employers to connect with employees and touch base regularly to assess progress, answer questions, go over project notes, and more. Often, a professional review can be tied into raises and promotions and can help determine someone’s future with a company.

While regular performance reviews allow employers to push their employees and drive productivity, it’s also an excellent opportunity for employees to further the conversation and possibly get more information about growth potential. Use these questions to help you make the most of your review and be your advocate as you grow and shape your career.

  1. What do you want me to focus on? This will likely come up throughout the review, but many times review feedback is simply a list of successes and failures or strengths and weaknesses. In those cases, it’s essential to get more tactical, specific feedback to shape your discussion and progress going forward.
  2. Is there feedback from other team members I should know? Sometimes it can be beneficial to ask if there’s any other employee feedback you should be aware of. A more holistic review with multiple points of feedback can help give you a more well-rounded understanding of your professional standing.
  3. What skills should I work on improving or adding? Asking what skills you should focus on in the future not only gives structure and next steps, it shows ambition and a desire to continue to grow and contribute to your team’s success. Asking if there are any classes, workshops, or other learning opportunities you should pursue can be a useful point of discussion with your employer.
  4. What are do you want me to prioritize my focus? It’s likely you and your boss will have a lot of goals as you go into your next review period, but it’s impossible to do everything and do it effectively. That means your time will have to be divided. Asking where your boss thinks you should be focusing the majority of your attention as you move towards your goals will help you both get on the same page and have the same expectations.
  5. What’s the next step for this position or a potential career roadmap for my future at the company? Sometimes it’s not clear what the next step is. Asking for clarity or information regarding possible future opportunities isn’t demanding a raise or a promotion; it shows your desire to grow and commit to the company. Wanting to have a greater understanding of what that would or could look like could be beneficial for both you and your employer.
