Going into the new year, you might have started thinking about looking for a new role. While you might be ready for a new challenge, that doesn’t necessarily mean you want everyone else to know you’re looking. If you’re concerned that if people get wind of your job hunt that your current role might be in jeopardy, there are a few things you’ll want to avoid.

Avoid These When Secretly Looking for a New Job

Talking to current coworkers:

If you really want to make sure that you keep your job search a secret, you probably don’t want to mention it to anyone on your current team. Even if they have connections in the industry, don’t mention that you’re open to new roles unless you really don’t mind your boss finding out. It might be a good time, however, to reach out directly and discretely to past coworkers through email or social media and see if they know of any opportunities or have any leads.

Announce it on social media:

If you’re trying to keep your current employer from finding out about your job search, you don’t want to add “Looking for work!” or “Open to new opportunities” on any public social media networks. Even if you’re not directly connected with your boss, some of your connections might be.

So what should you do?

Besides finding jobs online and applying directly, there are a few steps you can take to be more proactive in your job hunt while remaining subtle.

Let recruiters know online:

Both LinkedIn and Indeed have options for members that allow them to turn on an “open to new opportunities” or “looking for work” flag that will let recruiters who come across your profile that even though you’re currently employed, you’re open to discussing other opportunities or even actively looking to change roles.

Connect with recruiters directly:

It’s easy to email, message, or call a staffing firm and connect with a recruiter. Recruiters have a wide-open network of contacts and companies they work with so they can easily match available talent with available positions. Because recruiters work for outside agencies, they’re a safe source to contact when you’re looking for a job and don’t want your boss to find out.
