On January 1, 2020, we went out and set goals that ranged from easy to unrealistic. By the end of March, many of those goals veered from unrealistic to downright ludicrous.

The rule of 2020 was simply to survive. As we orient ourselves to the new normal and start to see the light at the end of the tunnel, we can start to think (or re-think) our goals for 2021.

Goal-setting is still important this year, so if you’re feeling uninspired, use these tips to get started.

Take Stock of 2020

Forget about the goals and plans you had for last year, and instead, think back to what you accomplished. Whether you started to plan, realized a dream, or managed to make it through, take time to acknowledge that you did do something.

Taking stock of last year helps ground you for this year and be kind and honest when setting your professional goals.

Visualize 2022

Where do you want to be on January 1, 2022?

Your end game should inform your goals for the year, and identifying your ideal scenario for January 1 next year allows you to work back.

Once you have it, identify what you need to get there. Set dates or goalposts, and be specific.

Remember: smaller goals are easier to reach, and they give you a sense of accomplishment. They also make your bigger goals easier to track and help you keep pushing even during the long stretches of the year.

Get a Little Help from a Friend

Even the best-laid plans can benefit from a new perspective, so go out and get it.

Whether you ask a colleague, mentor, or even a friend from another industry, don’t be afraid to get input into your plans and goals. Working with someone else will not only keep you accountable but help you navigate the inevitable struggles that come with progressing in your career.

In fact, your employer or an industry body may already offer a mentorship program, so you may not need to look far.

Aim High and Keep Going

The year 2020 wasn’t what anyone expected, and this next year could be just as challenging. But that doesn’t mean you can’t start thinking about and working toward what you want.

Remember to embrace your losses, celebrate your wins, and keep your eye on where you want to be in 2022. With hard work, determination, and a few venting sessions with a friend, you will get there.
